Helpful Tips for installing Faux Finials
If you are having trouble installing or adjusting Faux Finials, Please try the steps listed below.
The basic idea behind Faux Finials is that an ultra light weight finial can be supported simply with long pins, inserted through a rod pocket and secured just at the pinpoints. Make sure your pins are straight before beginning. If your pins are not straight, gently bend them at the base, back to straight and parallel. What we need to do is make sure the pins are inserted and pass straight through the rod pocket - as the rod, without piercing the gathers of the window treatment along the way. This can sometimes present a problem if your particular window treatment has a rod pocket that is either too tight or loose to the rod.
If your rod pocket seems tight, Try angling the pins - with the pins just pierced through the rod pocket at the corner of the window treatment, pull the finial into the room slightly so that only the pinpoints are touching the rod and gently slide the pins through. When the back of the finial meets the curve of the rod, withdraw slightly and reinsert the pinpoints into one or two gathers to secure. Adjust as necessary.
If this does not solve the problem, try gently "digging" through the rod pocket - with the pins just pierced through the rod pocket at the corner of the window treatment, slide the pins "in and out" with a small orbiting motion - using the pinpoints to make space inside the rod pocket. Slide the pins through a bit at a time and continue until the back of the finial meets the curve of the rod. Withdraw the pins slightly and insert the pinpoints into one or two gathers to secure. Adjust as necessary.
If your rod pocket seems loose, And your finials are sagging, insert the pinpoints in the uppermost portion of the rod pocket at the corner of the rod. Slide the pins through until the back of the finial meets the curve of the rod. Withdraw slightly and insert the pinpoints into the lower portion of the rod pocket. Adjust as necessary.
If your rod pocket is loose or oversize for the rod you are using, it can be helpful to use tape. With the window treatment removed, align a Faux Finial with the rod at its installed position - with the back of the finial touching the curve of the rod. Loosely wrap several layers of tape around the rod - covering 3/8 to 1/2in of the pinpoints. Pull the finial out and repeat for the other side. Reinstall the window treatment on the rod. Now insert the finial into the rod pocket and pierce the tape with the pinpoints. It can be helpful if the tape is a bit messy or wrinkly so the pins can easily pass into it, do not press the tape too firmly to the face of the rod. Use clear tape for sheers, masking or almost any common tape is fine for opaque window treatments.
If your finials are in but still need adjusting, Use the pins to adjust. Withdraw the finial slightly, and reposition the pinpoints either higher or lower in the rod pocket. As your last step, grasp the face of the rod pocket firmly with your palm, wrapping your fingers around to the back. Hold the pins firmly, and in small steps- adjust by "bending" the finial to level, back or forward as necessary.
If your pins seem to "cross" in the rod pocket, And want to pierce out of the rod pocket, make sure your pins are straight. If you inserted your pins too close together, and not parallel, this may happen. Try pinching the fabric of the rod pocket where you insert the pins and reinsert the pins. This will add additional fabric between the pins and will not draw them together as they pass deeper into the rod pocket.
For Decorative rods, Install into the gathers of the rod pocket as described above. Alternately, Faux Finials may be installed into the end of a decorative rod. Bend the last third of the pins back with a plier to form a tight "V" shape and insert into the ends of the rod.
For Traverse rods, Bend the pins back at a 90 degree angle and insert into the "return" or side of drape.
And finally, Once your finials are installed and adjusted, re dress your window treatment by straightening and evening any gathers, headings or pleats.
